Elections What is the minimum and maximum age to be called to a polling station?

Not even 60 days will have passed since the last municipal and regional elections when citizens in Spain will have a new electoral day.

It will be on July 23 when the general elections will be held to form the new Parliament and the Government after the last call by Pedro Sánchez. In addition, the chosen date coincides with the Santiago Apóstol bridge (July 25), a holiday in Castilla y León, Galicia, Navarra and the Basque Country.

To date, the only general elections held in Spain in the hottest month of the year took place on July 6, 1947.

On the other hand, the formation of the polling stations is the responsibility of the councils of each municipality under the supervision of the Zone Boards.

The President and the Members of each polling station are appointed by public lottery among all the people included in the list of voters of the corresponding polling station, who know how to read and write.

To be elected they must have reached the age of majority, that is, 18 years, and be under 70 years. However, citizens over 65 years of age may express their resignation within seven days after being elected to form a polling station.

The president will owe some of these regulated titles:

With the same procedure, two substitutes are also appointed for each one of the members of the Bureau.

On the other hand, with the notification of the designation, an instruction manual on their functions will be delivered to the members of the polling stations, supervised by the Central Electoral Board.

As contemplated by the electoral law, the draw to choose the members of a table is always held between the twenty-fifth and twenty-ninth days after the call.

In other words, the draw to choose the polling stations for the general elections will take place between June 24 and 28, 2023. Once the draw is made, the Zone Electoral Board will send notifications to the selected citizens at their homes in a period of 3 days.

Upon receiving the notification, voters will have a period of 7 days to present their allegations to the Zone Electoral Board if they want to try to get rid of it.

The demand for voting by mail for the elections on July 23 is expected to be in high demand as it takes place in the middle of the holiday season.

Requesting a vote by mail is easy, but you must meet a series of deadlines that are set in the call for elections published by the BOE on Tuesday, May 30.

Voting by mail can be requested at the Post Office in Spain, presenting the original DNI, passport or driving license. It can also be ordered electronically through the Correos.es website, although it requires identification with the electronic ID or with a valid digital certificate.
