A Scottish distillery sold a rare single malt whisky cask for record PS16m.

Ardbeg said "Cask No. 3" was purchased by an unnamed female collector, based in Asia via a private sale.

Experts claimed that the sale had broken all previous auction records for single malt casks.

A cask of The Macallan 1988 whisky was sold at auction last month for PS1m. It had been purchased 34 years ago for only PS5,000.

Ardbeg spirit was first distilled in 1975. It was initially aged in two separate casks, before being transferred into a single sherrybutt in 2014.

It has enough spirit to fill 440 bottles and is worth PS36,000.

Ardbeg, a Islay-based winemaker, said that the butt would eventually be bottled for its new owner over five years. She will be receiving 88 bottles each year.

This cask is one of the oldest Ardbeg has ever released. It was closed twice in the 1980s, 1990s, and then bought by Glenmorangie Company.

The company pledged to donate PS1m of the proceeds to local community causes in the next five year.

According to the spirit's aroma notes, Brazil nuts in toffee are what you smell. Linseed oil is next, followed by flowering blackcurrants and sweet, aromatic peat smoke.

Thomas Moradpour, chief executive at Ardbeg, stated that the sale was a source for pride for all members of the Ardbeg community that made this journey possible.

"Aardbeg was almost extinct 25 years ago. Today, it is one the most sought-after whiskies around the globe."

Andrew Shirley, editor at the Knight Frank Wealth Report, stated that the cask sale had set a "very interesting new benchmark".

Charles MacLean, a whisky expert, said that this truly unique whisky was a remarkable piece in liquid history. It is an evocative taste about what Ardbeg was like back when it malted its barley.
