Formula 1. Austrian Grand Prix: Verstappen starts in the lead of sprint race

After Friday's fastest qualifying time, Max Verstappen (Red Bull), will lead Saturday's sprint race. This will determine the grid for Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc, the reigning world champion, and the current leader in the provisional championship standings was beaten by Carlos Sainz, one of Ferrari's two drivers. He signs his third pole position for the season.

Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, both Mercedes drivers, were victims of road trips during the third and final phase. Russell will start 5th, while Hamilton will start 10th in the sprint race.

The Austrian GP starts on Sunday. It is the second race of the season that offers a sprint race on Saturday. This format was introduced last season during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola in April.

The sprint race will decide the starting grid for Sunday's Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, will occupy the 4th spot for the start to the sprint race.

Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine), will be 6th, ahead of the two Haas from Dane Kevin Magnussen/German Mick Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, the Alpine of Spaniard Fernando Alonso.
