The Gänsemarkt-Passage in downtown Hamburg, which opened in 1979, is to be demolished in September. A new multi-storey building with shops and restaurants as well as apartments is to be built on the site, said the head of Signa Real Estate, Timo Herzberg, to the radio station NDR 90.3. The building application had been submitted in consultation with the city, and now the building permit for the new building is still missing. “In the future, people will also be able to live and work there. This creates natural frequencies, which then allow for a colorful hustle and bustle,” said Herzberg.

22 apartments are planned for the upper floors of the new building, six of which are subsidized. When it comes to commercial tenants, the company also relies on small craft businesses such as a shoemaker and a goldsmith. Restaurants and other shops are also planned. According to Herzberg, consideration was also given to preserving parts of the building. However, together with the city, a decision was made to build a new building. After demolition, construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2023 and completion is scheduled for 2025.

The project developer belongs to the Signa Holding of the Austrian billionaire René Benko, which is also known in Germany as the owner of the department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. The portfolio of Signa Real Estate in Hamburg already includes the Alsterarkaden, the Alsterhaus and the planned Elbtower.
