Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - A total of 214 prohibited and dangerous objects have been seized in downtown Wiesbaden, the state capital of Hesse, since the weapons ban zone was designated in 2019. Among them were 170 knives of various kinds, as Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) announced in response to a parliamentary question from the FDP parliamentary group.
Wiesbaden is currently the only gun ban zone in Hesse. The Frankfurt police recently spoke out in favor of a gun ban zone in an area of the station district. Irritant spray devices and weapon-like pointed or sharp-edged objects such as knives should be prohibited in the area. The establishment of a weapons ban zone is being examined in Kassel.
Weapons ban zones are an element that can contribute both to increasing the sense of security and to the ban on dangerous stabbing weapons, explained the Minister of the Interior. The state government has been campaigning for years to specifically restrict the carrying of knives not only in crime hotspots, but also in heavily frequented places. It is about the environment of children's, youth and educational institutions as well as public transport and pedestrian zones.
In the state capital of Hesse, carrying dangerous objects similar to weapons is prohibited on several streets and squares in the city center between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. According to the city's security ordinance, this includes knives of any kind, hammers and objects metal, sharp or pointed, clubs, wooden sticks and baseball bats. Axes, hatchets and gloves with hard fillings are also forbidden.
In the zone, the police and public order office are allowed to check people for weapons without reason and can also levy high fines in the event of violations. Items classified as dangerous may also be confiscated.
