Hesse: 299 cameras monitor public spaces and streets

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - A total of 299 cameras are used in Hesse for video surveillance on public streets and squares. These cameras monitored 28 protected areas in 20 Hessian cities, said Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) at the request of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden. "With modern video technology, we can make public spaces even safer."

The cameras deter criminals, increase the police's ability to react, strengthen the population's sense of security and make it easier to solve crimes, emphasized Beuth. Since 2021, the state has been supporting the expansion of video security technology in the municipalities with 2.8 million euros.
