Hesse: Abuse and violence: More cases of child endangerment

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Last year, the Hessian youth welfare offices found a child endangerment in 5134 cases - that was more than ever since the statistics began in 2012. The increase compared to the previous year is one percent, that said State Statistical Office on Wednesday in Wiesbaden. This is based on risk assessments carried out by the authorities. There were a total of 15,408 of them last year, 200 fewer than in 2020.

The State Office reported that 2,679 cases were acute and in 2,455 cases, there was a latent endangerment of the child's welfare. The causes were psychological abuse in 48 percent, neglect in 47 percent, physical abuse in 25 percent and signs of sexual violence in 5 percent.

In 4,214 cases, the Offices for Children and Young People ordered provisional protective measures such as taking them into care or removing them from a home or family. According to the information, the cause was overwhelmed parents (35 percent), unaccompanied arrivals from abroad (32 percent) and signs of neglect (13 percent) or physical abuse (14 percent). The increase of almost four percent compared to the previous year is due to more unaccompanied entries from abroad. In 873 cases, parents lost full or partial custody of their child, five percent more cases than in the previous year.
