Hesse: ADAC test: Hesse's rest areas perform worst

Munich (dpa / lhe) - According to the automobile club ADAC, motorway rest areas in Hesse are in poor condition. That's the result of a nationwide test released on Tuesday. In it, the ADAC primarily criticizes the sanitary facilities and the sense of security at the service areas. Four rest areas in Hesse were examined. Two of them failed in all categories.

In Hesse, the ADAC looked at the Stadtwald rest areas on Autobahn 3, Nadelöhr on Autobahn 4, Brühlgraben on Autobahn 5 and Am Pommern on Autobahn 7. All Hessian rest areas were rated "poor" or "very poor". The rest areas on the A3 and on the A5 actually performed the worst of all the facilities examined.

According to the ADAC, there are around 1,500 unattended service areas on German autobahns. For the test, 50 rest stops along the fifteen longest motorways nationwide were examined. Each system was checked twice in the summer of 2022 with an interval of at least 24 hours outside of the holiday season. They were evaluated according to the criteria "sanitary facilities", "outdoor facilities", "traffic and parking" and "personal safety". More than every fifth system failed with the grade "poor" or "very poor". The "sanitary facilities" category was weighted the most. Fourteen of the 50 rest areas examined failed in this category.

The ADAC carried out the rest area test for the third time. Compared to the last study in 2018, there were hardly any positive changes. The ADAC blames the motorway company that operates the rest areas for the poor conditions.
