Hesse: Al-Wazir calls on citizens to do their own work because of the gas crisis

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - In order to save energy in the gas crisis, Hesse's Economics Minister Tarek Al-Wazir is calling on citizens to do DIY. "We can all do something to ensure that energy is used more efficiently at home," said the Green politician on Tuesday. This could be an insulated heating pipe, insulation behind the radiator or on the hatch of the attic stairs.

While gas prices have exploded, craft businesses are often fully booked. "Many smaller measures can be done yourself and are not only inexpensive, but also allowed in rented apartments," explained the minister. The State Energy Agency has compiled tips on the website www.hessen-spart-energie.de.

These include videos with energy consultant Carsten Herbert, who has more than 47,000 subscribers on YouTube as the "Energy Savings Commissioner". The do-it-yourself measures shown could be implemented almost immediately, explained Herbert. "You watch a DIY episode, then go to the hardware store or the Internet and get started."

Al-Wazir reiterated his appeal to save energy and especially gas. "We have to prevent that we don't have enough gas in winter." This would have major repercussions. In Germany there is concern that Russia will not turn on the gas tap on the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 1 after a scheduled maintenance that could be over by the end of this week.
