Hesse: Angler holds hand grenade from Edersee for bottle

Waldeck (dpa / lhe) - An alleged bottle found by an angler on the Edersee turned out to be a hand grenade from the Second World War. On Wednesday evening, the man was waiting at the lake for an acquaintance who wanted to pick him up by boat, the Hessian riot police said on Thursday. The angler discovered the object on the shore and initially thought it was a bottle, took it on board the boat and cleaned it of mud and dirt. When the bottle turned out to be a hand grenade, he threw it back into the water and alerted the police, who in turn informed the explosive ordnance clearance service.

The grenade was about ten to 15 meters from the shore at a depth of at least eight meters, said the riot police. She should be recovered by a diving company in the course of the coming week. According to the information, the entrances to the exact location were cordoned off, and a buoy marks the suspected spot where the grenade is now lying. According to pictures, this is most likely an American example from the Second World War.
