Hesse: Arms exchange in Gießen may take place

Gießen (dpa / lhe) - A weapons exchange in Gießen may take place. The Gießen Administrative Court largely granted the organizer's urgent application on Friday. The event is planned from November 17th to 19th in the Hessenhalle. However, the city was instructed to take measures "to rule out significant disruptions to public security or order".

The city of Gießen had forbidden the organizer to apply for a "trade law assessment". The reason given was that weapons can also be sold there, which is illegal without a special permit. In addition, it is to be expected that a large number of Nazi memorabilia would be offered.

The organizer replied that the exhibitors had been made aware of the gun restrictions, which would be monitored and enforced. The criminal liability for the exhibition of Nazi memorabilia was unequivocally pointed out in several languages.

The 8th Chamber of the Administrative Court confirmed in its urgent decision that the applicant had a guaranteed right to the exhibition due to the freedom of trade. The ban on the arms exchange as a whole is not proportionate. The decision is not yet final. Those involved can lodge a complaint with the Hessian Administrative Court in Kassel (Az.: 8 L 2271/22.GI).
