Hesse: Authority approves summit coverage of K S spoil heap

Kassel (dpa/lhe) - The Kassel regional council has approved covering the summit area of the potash spoil heap at the Hattorf site of the K S fertilizer company to protect nature. This is intended to reduce the leaching of saline heap water, as the authority announced on Monday. The permit is for 9.5 hectares to be covered with plastic sheeting, a drainage layer and soil with future green growth.

According to the regional council, 2.2 hectares can be applied by the end of this year, another 2.8 hectares by the end of 2023 and another 1.5 hectares by the end of 2024. In addition, a further three hectares are to be covered one year after the future end of the deposits on the potash spoil heap.

District President Mark Weinmeister explained that with the approval of the so-called heap top cover "the necessary balance between economic planning security and ecological responsibility could be taken into account".
