Hesse: Awo leader witness in corruption process against ex-OB

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - In the trial against the voted-out Frankfurt Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) on suspicion of corruption, a central leader of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo) is invited as a witness this Wednesday (trial begins at 9 a.m.). Hannelore Richter is said to have called Feldmann by SMS for mutual support. She is also said to have ordered his girlfriend at the time to be the head of an Awo-Kita at an excessive salary, although he was said to have lacked the necessary qualifications and professional experience at the time.

The public prosecutor accuses Feldmann of accepting donations and other benefits from Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo). In return, he wanted to benevolently consider the interests of the social association. Feldmann has so far denied the allegations. The 64-year-old was voted out of office on November 6th and has been out of office since last Friday.

The case against Feldmann is linked to the Awo scandal involving allegations of fraud amounting to millions of euros against former management officials of the association in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Hannelore Richter was also charged. Her lawyer has denied the allegations. She was managing director of Awo Wiesbaden until the beginning of 2020 and had taken on special tasks at Awo Frankfurt.
