Langen/Offenbach (dpa/lhe) - An attentive bank employee foiled an attempted scam in Langen. As the police announced on Tuesday, a customer came to a bank counter early Monday evening who wanted to withdraw a large amount of money from her account. A taxi was already waiting for the elderly woman in front of the branch. According to the police, the woman had previously received a so-called shock call: According to this, her son caused an accident in Austria in which a cyclist was killed. The son has now been arrested and has to pay bail of 50,000 euros for his release. The woman therefore wanted to pick up all her savings. However, the bank employee became suspicious of the amount and withheld the payment.

The police were then called and a complaint was filed about the attempted fraud. The police acknowledged the prudent intervention of the bank employee, who saved the injured party from losing their savings through his "instinct". Also on Monday evening, officials in Offenbach temporarily arrested a man who had been wanted under a European arrest warrant for grandchild fraud since 2020 during a traffic check.
