Hesse: "Bike paths and sidewalks are no longer appendages to a road"

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The expansion of cycle paths and sidewalks is to be further promoted in Hesse. "Cycle paths and sidewalks are no longer appendages to a road, but part of a municipal or district-wide network of paths," said Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) on Wednesday in Wiesbaden.

With almost 140 million euros, the state has promoted expansion in cities and communities in recent years. Almost 600 projects for cycle paths and footpaths have been made possible for the municipalities, triggering a boost in investment for local mobility, reported Al-Wazir.

Since 2017, the state's local mobility guidelines have regulated the funding of the municipalities for the implementation of these projects. The cities, municipalities and rural districts are also given technical support through advice and quality standards. After five years, the guideline was evaluated and extended until 2029.

This would continue to provide sufficient financial resources, assured the Minister of Transport. "In the future, too, no meaningful footpath and cycle path project in Hessen's municipalities should fail because of money."
