Hesse: Blocking the Mainkai during the holidays: bypass concept

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - The northern Mainkai in Frankfurt will again be closed to car traffic in the summer weeks. Traffic Director Stefan Majer (Greens) presented a corresponding bypass concept on Monday. The aim is to use the summer months with the holiday-related lower traffic to gain more experience of the effects.

The conversion of the Mainkai runs from July 11th to September 5th. Then various promotions will be offered on the closed route under the title "Summer on the Main".

In a controversial traffic test, the Mainkai had already been closed for a year. The bypass concept now presented builds on the findings of this one-year test phase 2019/20. It is intended to avoid small-scale relocations to the surrounding streets and to the southern bank of the Main and Sachsenhausen-Nord as far as possible. The aim is to divert general traffic north of the city center and direct truck traffic south of the Main and the railway line.
