Hesse: car races in Kassel ended with an accident and high damage

Kassel (dpa/lhe) - Serious accident after allegedly illegal car racing in Kassel: Two 40- and 42-year-old men raced through the city towards the motorway at around 200 kilometers per hour, the police said on Friday. While the 42-year-old was able to avoid a red traffic light at an intersection, the 40-year-old lost control of his car on Thursday evening. He veered to the right, spun over traffic islands and sidewalks, and crashed into a car dealership mast. Ultimately, his car and mast crashed into a Mercedes displayed outside. Nobody got hurt.

The opponent of the race initially fled, but shortly afterwards he was arrested, the police said. After taking a blood sample at the station, officials initiated a drunk driving investigation. The other man's driver's license was confiscated. Both drivers are also being investigated for a prohibited motor vehicle race. An expert estimated the damage incurred at a total of 200,000 euros.
