Hesse: cat crosses road: loss of control over car

Gießen (dpa/lhe) - A chain reaction apparently triggered by a cat led to an accident with two minor injuries and six-figure damage in Gießen in central Hesse. An 18-year-old driver was driving on Friday night when the animal suddenly ran across the road, the police said. The 20-year-old passenger shouted loudly and apparently frightened the 18-year-old so much that he confused the gas pedal with the brake pedal. The result: he lost control of his car, drove over a curb and green verge and collided with a house wall.

According to the police, the young men suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital. While the car is only "scrap" value, the wall of the house has remained intact. However, there were cracks in the half-timbered house and a structural engineer had to examine it now. Officials estimated the damage to property at around 100,000 euros. Cat was able to continue walking - she was ultimately not involved in the accident.
