Hesse: Child protection in the focus of Epiphany singing

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - Around 1000 children and young people are expected at the end of December at the nationwide opening of the 65th Epiphany Singing in Frankfurt. "I am particularly pleased that the carol singers can personally bring the blessing to people again," said Pastor Dirk Bingener, President of the children's mission organization "Die Sternsinger". Due to Corona, this was only possible digitally for the past two years.

After 20 years, the Diocese of Limburg is hosting for the second time. 300,000 girls and boys from 27 German dioceses will be on the road nationwide on December 30th. In the Catholic tradition, carol singers in the robes of the Three Wise Men go from door to door after Christmas and collect money for children in need. The motto this year: "Strengthen children, protect children - in Indonesia and worldwide".

"Children are victims of organized crime, especially in poor regions. It is all the more important to protect children from an early age," said Bishop of Limburg Georg Bätzing. That is why the protection of children from violence is the focus this year.

The Dreikönigssingen campaign, which started in 1959, is supported by the Kindermissionswerk and the Bund der Deutschen Katholische Jugend (BDKJ) and, according to the organizers, is the world's largest solidarity campaign by children for children. In the past campaign, around 8,500 carol singers collected more than 38.6 million euros nationwide despite corona restrictions.
