Hesse: Christoph Degen: Feldmann resignation right consequence

Wiesbaden/Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - The Secretary General of the Hessian SPD has described the announced resignation of Frankfurt Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) as the correct consequence of the recent debates about his person. "It would have been good if he had decided to take this step earlier," said Christoph Degen on Tuesday at the request of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden. "And I personally wouldn't mind if he didn't wait until January next year to step down."

"In the end, what counts is that he clears the way for the next generation and that the city is spared an expensive and time-consuming vote-out process," said the Secretary General of the Hessian Social Democrats.

Feldmann has announced his retirement for early 2023. The mayor of Hesse's largest city has been charged in connection with the Awo affair and had also noticed other slips in the past few weeks. Most recently, even the Frankfurt SPD, as Feldmann's own party, had called for his resignation. The city council actually wanted to decide on the deselection procedure in the coming week.
