Hesse: Disability: 170 teachers retired early

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - In 2021, 112 male and 57 female teachers in Hesse were put into early retirement due to being unable to work. Six years earlier, there were 164 male and 59 female teachers, according to the Ministry of Education's response to a parliamentary question from the AfD parliamentary group in Wiesbaden. Psychological reasons are responsible for a large proportion (67 percent) of teachers taking early retirement because they are unable to work. According to the ministry, this is based on data from 2015 to November 2021. Hesse has a total of 55,680 teaching positions in the current school year.

The reasons for a disability retirement are complex and depend on each individual case, the ministry explained. It pointed out that teachers could access various offers to maintain and improve their health. Among other things, there has been a psychological telephone hotline since April 2020, where teachers can reach competent contact persons on a daily basis. By mid-July 2022, there had been 198 consultations there.
