Hesse: District Administrator in front of the refugee summit: "We are at the limit"

Cologne (dpa/lhe) - Before the so-called refugee summit this Thursday in Berlin, the district administrator of the Bergstraße district in southern Hesse is demanding more efforts to limit immigration. "We're at the limit. We don't have the space to accommodate people properly. We don't have the space in which the children can learn," said Christian Engelhardt (CDU) on Wednesday evening on the "RTL Direct" program. Around 50 percent of those who came to the district from third countries actually had no prospect of staying. “The federal government must ensure that in the end only those people who are likely to be allowed to stay come to us,” he said.

Specifically, with a view to the EU's external borders, he suggested: "The borders must be strengthened. I believe that the best thing would be to create large accommodations near the borders, perhaps also to support the states on the EU's external borders in this and carry out the procedures there," said Engelhardt.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) invited representatives of the federal states and the municipal umbrella organizations to talk to them about the accommodation and care of asylum seekers and refugees. In doing so, she is also responding to calls for help from some municipalities.
