Hesse: Energy supplier warns of power outages caused by heaters

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Stadtwerke Wiesbaden warn against using mobile electric direct heaters instead of gas heaters in winter. "Excessive use can overload our power grids and thus lead to uncontrollable power failures," said managing director Peter Lautz after a statement on Monday.

In the event of an overload, parts of the power grid would be switched off to be on the safe side. Mobile devices such as fan heaters, radiators or radiant heaters could not be switched off by the municipal utility if there was a risk of overload. If mobile electric heaters were not switched off by the users in the event of a power failure, there was a risk of long outages.

Private customers of gas heat can therefore be prepared to continue to be supplied even in the event of a gas shortage. It is advisable to start making energy-saving preparations in the summer. This includes maintenance on gas heaters. Around half of all apartments in Germany are heated with natural gas. The nationwide technology associations VDE and DVWG had previously warned of overloads caused by mobile electrical direct heating devices.
