Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - According to initial estimates by the security authorities in Hesse, the number of burglaries increased again in 2022. The final number of cases was collected centrally at the end of the year and presented to the police crime statistics in the spring, the Interior Ministry said at the request of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden.
Within the past five years (2017-2021), burglaries in Hesse had fallen by more than 50 percent due to the lack of opportunities to commit crimes, also because of the corona pandemic. Many people were working from home and there were fewer vacation trips because of the pandemic. In the current year, according to the ministry, the perpetrators are apparently making increasing use of the absence of residents in apartments and houses. In 2021, a total of 2,039 completed burglaries were reported to the police in Hesse.
