Hesse: Five kilograms of heroin in a suitcase: More than five years in prison

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - After arriving at Frankfurt Airport with around five kilograms of heroin in a suitcase, a woman has now been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison by the Frankfurt Regional Court. The customs authorities had been alerted by an unknown whistleblower to the plane coming from Johannesburg, South America, with the 52-year-old suspect. The drugs were seized upon arrival. Apparently, the people behind it had also gotten wind of it: When the woman, accompanied by the officials, came to the agreed handover in a hotel, the rooms had already been canceled.

The woman made a full confession in court. She wanted to use the £10,000 promised by the client to finance an abdominal operation. The medical intervention has now been carried out in a German prison hospital. Friday's verdict is not yet final. The defense had asked for a sentence of only four years in prison.
