Hesse: Frankfurt police are ready for unity against Marseille

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - The Frankfurt police will be in action with a large contingent at the Champions League game between Eintracht Frankfurt and Olympique Marseille. "As the Frankfurt police, we are aware that the upcoming football game is particularly in focus due to the events in Marseille," said a spokesman for the Frankfurt police on Tuesday.

The operational concept for the game on Wednesday envisages, among other things, an early presence in the city area and in public places, especially in the station district and in Sachsenhausen. On the way to the stadium, too, the police use a large number of forces to ensure that football fans get there safely. "We're expecting a sold-out game with 49,000 spectators. Up to 2,000 guest fans are coming from Marseille," said the police spokesman. The majority of these trailers arrive by bus or individually by car and train. The majority of fans only arrive on the day of the match.

"We will see where the visiting fans are in the city and then make sure that they are all brought to the stadium," said the spokesman. The police are also in close contact with the federal police forces and their French colleagues. Preliminary checks, including at the German-French border, are also planned. "If we should find troublemakers or find dangerous objects on people, we will intervene and take consistent action," said the police spokesman.

Riots like in the first leg in Marseille should definitely be avoided in Frankfurt. Around the 1-0 win of the Europa League winners in France on September 13, there were firecrackers and rocket fire from the fan camps. One of the rockets hit a 65-year-old Eintracht fan on the neck and seriously injured him. In the meantime, the French public prosecutor's office is investigating the thrower, among other things, on suspicion of attempted homicide.
