Hesse: Frankfurt's power grid is being significantly expanded

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - The capacity of the Frankfurt power grid is to be expanded by half by 2027. To do this, substations would have to be expanded and power lines in the city area strengthened, announced the energy supplier Mainova and the network operator Tennet on Thursday. Several factors are responsible for the expected increase in electricity consumption: In addition to economic growth in the region, digitization and the increasing number of data centers, this also includes increasing e-mobility and the switch to heat pumps in households.

Among other things, the substation in Frankfurt-Griesheim will be renewed, which, according to Tennet, will cost an amount in the double-digit millions. According to Mainova, replacing a transformer and strengthening the grid connections will increase the power in the Frankfurt grid by 100 megavolt amperes from 2024, which corresponds to the electricity requirements of a large city with 100,000 inhabitants. Frankfurt has more than 750,000 inhabitants.
