Hesse: Frankfurt Zoo accepts endangered duck and geese breeds

Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - 17 new waterfowl have moved into the Frankfurt Zoo. With the Pomeranian ducks, German Peking ducks and Emden geese, the zoo says it wants to draw attention to endangered livestock breeds on Monday. The flightless animals were donated to the enclosure by private breeders and can be seen on the Großer Weiher and on the Stelzvogelwiese.

"It's nice that more life is now returning to the Great Weiher," said Ina Hartwig (SPD), head of the science department. The Emden goose is one of the oldest and heaviest poultry breeds in Germany and is a domesticated form of the greylag goose. The German Peking duck and the Pomeranian duck are related to the mallard.
