Hesse: Hanau assassin: trial against father goes into the next round

Almost a year ago, the father of the Hanau assassin was before the court. The trial against the man whose son murdered nine people with foreign roots in February 2020 is now before the Hanau Regional Court.

Hanau (dpa/lhe) - Almost a year after the verdict for insult against the father of the Hanau assassin, the Hanau Regional Court will deal with the case on Monday (September 5). The man was sentenced to a fine of 5,400 euros by the Hanau District Court in October last year. Both he and the public prosecutor appealed against the decision, so the case is now going to the next instance. According to a court spokeswoman, a hearing is scheduled.

The man is the father of the 43-year-old German who murdered nine people for racist motives in Hanau on February 19, 2020. Then he is said to have killed his mother and himself. In a criminal complaint, the father is said to have described people who took part in a demonstration near his home as "wild strangers". Among the participants in the demonstration were relatives of the victims of the attack. The motto of the meeting was "We are not waiting for a new racist attack".

The public prosecutor's office had also accused the father in the proceedings before the district court of having described a special task force from Frankfurt, which was deployed in his house on the night of the crime, as a "terrorist squad" or "terrorist unit". He is also said to have accused the mayor of Hanau, Claus Kaminsky (SPD), of "voter deception". He was therefore charged with insult in three counts.

The father's role was also examined in the investigations by the federal prosecutor's office into the attack against unknown persons. According to the investigators, the 43-year-old had no accomplices or assistants in the act. They also saw no evidence that his father was involved, as the federal prosecutor announced in mid-December. The father was also a topic on several occasions in the investigative committee of the Hessian state parliament on the attack, but the public was excluded from the relevant hearings in order to protect his personal rights. The committee also interviewed an expert who attended the first trial before the Hanau District Court. According to the court spokeswoman, his report will be read out during the forthcoming hearing.
