Hesse: Hesse promises extensive help after the earthquake disaster

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) promised extensive support from Hesse to the people after the earthquake disaster in south-east Turkey. The consequences of the earthquake are immeasurable and the number of deaths unimaginably high, said the head of government on Tuesday in the Hessian state parliament in Wiesbaden. Hesse mourn and feel for the people affected.

The state has a very special relationship with Turkey. The people who came here from Turkey enriched Hesse enormously and shaped it in many ways, especially culturally. "Our country would be unimaginable without Turkish immigrants and would be poorer in every respect," stressed the prime minister.

"Hesse is standing by Turkey's side at this time and we will do everything we can to help and support in this difficult situation so that people can stay in their homeland." In the affected areas, relief supplies for accommodation, care and medical care for the local people are now needed.

Hesse is providing concrete support with tents, tent heaters, camp beds and sleeping bags with a total value of three-quarters of a million euros from the Hessian civil protection department, the head of government reported. These relief supplies have already been dispatched. In addition, Hessen is preparing an offer of assistance in the form of medicines, medical devices and consumables.

The number of confirmed deaths after the earthquake disaster was more than 37,500 in Turkey and Syria as of Tuesday morning, and more than 80,000 people were injured. Thousands continue to be missing.
