Hesse: Hesse refused to take over the costs for citizen tests

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Corona citizen tests will be subject to a fee in Hesse as in other federal states from Friday. There is no reason to release the federal government from its responsibility, the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs said on Tuesday. The federal government had decided that from the end of June there should be no free citizen tests in test centers and pharmacies for everyone. The quick tests are only free for certain risk groups. For all others, three euros per test are usually due.

The Ministry of Social Affairs refers to a clear demarcation of tasks in combating the pandemic: the federal government financed the test centers, the federal states the tests in schools, daycare centers, administration and the vaccination centers. Assuming the costs of the citizen tests and the associated administrative work "could lead to a budget risk that could quickly run into the hundreds of millions, which the state budget would not be able to bear."
