Hesse: imprisonment required for suspected IS sympathizers

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - In the trial against an alleged sympathizer of the terrorist group Islamic State, the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt has applied for seven years in prison. The 30-year-old accused was guilty of numerous violations of the Weapons and Explosives Act and the preparation of a serious act of violence that endangered the state, the prosecutor said on Tuesday before the district court.

During a search of the man's Kassel apartment in April 2021, numerous weapons were seized. The defense asked for a suspended sentence of two years. The verdict is expected to be announced on Thursday (1.12./2 p.m.).

In the proceedings, which have been ongoing since mid-July, the accused only admitted possession of weapons and ammunition. He was a gun nut and hoarded things as a hobby - he denied a political background. The public prosecutor's office, on the other hand, sees him convicted of a political crime, especially since the 30-year-old was convicted of similar incidents ten years ago.
