Hesse: Investigations after the shot was fired during a police operation are ongoing

Butzbach/Friedberg (dpa/lhe) - After several shots were fired during a police operation in the Wetteraukreis, the investigation is ongoing. According to previous knowledge, the shots were fired on the tires of a car to prevent the 36-year-old driver from trying to escape, a police spokesman said on Friday. It is still unclear how many police officers shot and how many shots were fired.

The shots came last Sunday when a police patrol wanted to check a truck driver and the driver of the car because there was a suspicion that the truck was stolen. As it turned out, the driver was the owner of the truck. He had previously followed the alleged vehicle thief on Autobahn 5 and also informed the police about it by telephone.

When both vehicle drivers left the autobahn near Butzbach in the Wetterau district, the officials wanted to stop them. The truck driver then jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. A police helicopter was also used to search for him, but he could not be arrested. The 36-year-old was briefly arrested but then released.

According to previous investigations, the truck and a second truck were stolen from a company premises in Nieder-Ohmen (Vogelsbergkreis) late on Saturday evening.
