Hesse: Kassel is examining the establishment of a weapons ban zone

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Kassel is considering setting up a weapons ban zone to increase public safety. There are already concrete tests for the project, said the Ministry of the Interior at the request of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden. A spokesman for the northern Hessian city confirmed the considerations. Kassel is in contact with representatives of the state police for the project. A final result is not yet available.

The first weapons ban zone in Hesse was created in the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden at the beginning of 2019. According to the Ministry of the Interior, 172 banned weapons were seized in Wiesbaden by the end of last year. Among them were 137 knives.

Because of the corona pandemic, the majority of these seizures in Wiesbaden fell in 2019. In the two years that followed, there were fewer people on the streets during the lockdown period and therefore fewer controls by the state and city police. As a result, fewer weapons were seized.
