Hesse: Law is intended to make Hesse climate-neutral by 2045

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - With a climate law, the black-green state government wants to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Hesse to zero by 2045. The draft law passed on Friday is intended to create the basis for the necessary measures, said Environment and Climate Minister Priska Hinz (Greens) in Wiesbaden. In view of the current millions of euros in damage in agriculture and forestry, this is not only an ecological necessity, but also economically and socially imperative in order to maintain prosperity.

The draft includes the already announced tightening of the targets - originally, Hessen was supposed to be climate-neutral by 2050. According to the plans, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by at least 40 percent by 2025 compared to 1990 levels. By 2030, 65 percent of emissions are to be saved - instead of the previously planned 55 percent. By 2040 it should be 88 percent less, by 2045 Hessen should be climate-neutral. The state administration is to be organized in a CO2-neutral manner by 2030, and from 2026 there should no longer be fossil-fuel heating in state buildings.

All laws, regulations and major funding programs of the state government should also be checked to see whether they can be optimized with a view to climate goals. A scientific climate advisory board is to monitor the path to reduction and advise the state government.

The SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament accused black and green of having taken far too long to present a climate law. The SPD had already done this over a year ago. It is also to be feared that this is the lowest common denominator of the coalition partners.
