Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The left-wing faction in the Hessian state parliament has called on the state government to do "everything in its power" to help students in the current crisis. A possible lever would be adequate funding for the student unions, among other things in order to be able to continue to offer affordable food in the canteens, said the parliamentary group leader Elisabeth Kula on Thursday in Wiesbaden. In the medium term, the plants should be able to create more student housing. The left demands 2000 additional dormitories per year.
Energy shortages and drastically increased living costs are hitting students hard, emphasized Kula. Therefore, one-off payments are not enough. "For lasting costs, you need lasting relief," she said. All educational institutions, including universities, canteens and libraries, would have to remain open this winter and should not be closed for cost reasons.
