Hesse: low water in the Edersee: shipping and tourism suffer

Waldeck/Verden (dpa/lhe) - The persistent drought is causing the level of the Edersee to continue to fall. According to Jens Köhne from the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) Weser, the largest reservoir in Hesse is currently only a fifth full. Its water is used to regulate the Weser and the Mittelland Canal.

According to Köhne, the minimum delivery volume had to be reduced from 30 to six cubic meters of water per second because of the low level. This also lowers the level of the Weser. Commercial and leisure shipping is therefore no longer possible on the Oberweser.

The low water level also affects tourism on the Edersee. "In the water sports sector, there are hailing cancellations," said Winfried Geisler from the Eder-Diemel Regional Association (RVED), an advocacy group for municipalities, water sports enthusiasts, hoteliers and restaurateurs. The gastronomy suffers. "The damage is in the millions."
