Hesse: Marburg celebrates the 800th birthday of the city on the closed B3

Marburg (dpa/lhe) - The central Hessian city of Marburg is celebrating its anniversary and is transforming part of the federal highway 3 into a colorful promenade. For this purpose, the four-lane road will be closed for around 2.5 kilometers on Whitsunday (June 5). Visitors can expect a colorful program on one side of the road and a huge birthday table with more than 800 marquee sets. On the other hand, in keeping with the International Environment Day on June 5th, alternative mobility should be the focus, and cyclists, skaters and rickshaw drivers will have free rein here.

This year Marburg is celebrating the 800th anniversary of its first mention as a city. Depending on the weather, between 15,000 and 30,000 guests are expected to attend the big celebration on Sunday. Due to the closure of the federal highway called "Stadtautobahn" in Marburg, the organizers appeal to travel by bus and train.

The city relies on participation at its anniversary celebration. According to a spokeswoman, active members from around 370 clubs, institutions, neighbourhoods, organizations and companies offer a diverse program at the more than 800 tables at the banquet table. According to the organizers, every 20th table will remain free as a "getting to know table" so that visitors can meet spontaneously. There are also several stages.

The party will be on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. under the motto "Tischlein deck dich". The B3 will be closed to traffic in both directions between Marburg-Süd and Cölbe-Wehrda from 5 a.m. in the morning and until 1 a.m. at night. Detours will be signposted.
