Hesse: Minister of the Interior: Taser use has a high preventive effect

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The Hessian police have so far resorted to the Taser in 36 cases during their operations in the current year. At the request of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden, the Ministry of the Interior announced that the use of the electric shocker 21 had been threatened. The taser was triggered 15 times. Throughout 2021, the Hessian police used the Taser on 42 missions.

"In many cases, the taser is the milder version of the firearm and is a useful addition to the equipment of our police officers," said Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU). The weapon has a very high preventive effect. The threat that leads to a de-escalation of the situation during an operation is often enough. "Therefore, the operation is useful and helpful, can possibly save lives and protect our police forces from dangerous situations."

Nationwide, each of the seven police headquarters is equipped with five devices. According to the ministry, 35 Tasers are currently available for special situations. The stun gun is used to incapacitate a perpetrator for several seconds. Two arrows connected to the weapon by wires are shot at a person and electrical impulses are transmitted to the body. The Hessian police have been using tasers since 2019, which are officially referred to as distance electropulse devices.
