Hesse: Minister of the Interior: Use preventive custody in individual cases

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The Hessian Ministry of the Interior warns climate activists from the group "Last Generation" against escalating their protests. "The Hessian police are determined to use preventive detention in the event of previously announced actions by the protest group "Last Generation" or other protest groups, insofar as the legal requirements are met in individual cases," the Hessian Ministry of the Interior told the VRM newspapers and portals on request.

The so-called preventive custody is regulated differently in the individual federal states. According to the report, preventive detention of up to six days is possible in Hesse, but only by order of a judge. A central goal is "to protect the citizens from the impairments and dangers caused by illegal actions," said a spokesman for Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) to the VRM newspapers and portals.

In Bavaria, citizens can even be detained for up to a month on the basis of a judicial decision in order to prevent the commission of an administrative offense of considerable importance for the general public or a criminal offence. This period can be extended by a maximum of one additional month.
