Hesse: monkey offspring in the Frankfurt Zoo

Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - offspring in the Frankfurt Zoo: With striking white lids and black facial skin, red-headed mangabeys, a monkey species belonging to the monkey species, are a real eye-catcher. The animals, which originate from West Africa, are rarely kept in zoos, even though they are considered an endangered species. But now the 19-year-old "Solei" has been the mother of a small son since November 23, as a zoo spokeswoman said on Thursday.

The young animal, still comparatively bald and without the fluffy white facial hair of the adult animals, is the first offspring of the species in Frankfurt Zoo. As a good monkey mother, "Solei" always carries the little one close to her body.

Both parents came to Frankfurt Zoo in 2020. At the beginning of November, three young females from the Apenheul Primate Park in the Netherlands were added - they can now learn how to handle a young animal from "Solei". "It's really good for the social animals," said curator Sabrina Linn. However, anyone who wants to visit the offspring of monkeys should wear a mouth and nose mask: To protect the great apes, masks are still compulsory in the Bogori Forest at Frankfurt Zoo.
