Hesse: More rain, more green waste: Significantly more organic waste in 2021

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - A significant increase in organic waste caused the amount of household waste in Hesse to rise last year. In total, an average of 464 kilograms of household waste per person was generated in the state in 2021, which was five kilograms or one percent more than a year earlier, as the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Wiesbaden. The total amount of household waste in Hesse was 2.92 million tons, 32,100 tons more than in the previous year.

At 144 kilograms per person, organic waste and household waste made up the largest part of household waste. Separately collected recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard and cardboard accounted for 137 kilograms per person and seven kilograms per person for waste electrical and electronic equipment. After a significant increase in the first Corona year 2020, the amount of bulky waste shrank again last year to 29 kilograms per person.

The statisticians also attribute the higher amount of organic waste to the weather: In view of the greater amount of precipitation, the plants grew more vigorously, so that 13 percent more green waste was produced from gardens and parks. But the organic waste collected via the organic waste bin also increased by seven percent compared to the previous year. The fact that the Schwalm-Eder district was the last district in Hesse to introduce the organic waste bin for the separate collection of organic waste may also have contributed to this.
