Hesse: More than 2800 Leon Aid Islands for children in Hesse

Wiesbaden/Rotenburg an der Fulda (dpa/lhe) - According to the State Criminal Police Office, the concept of the Leon Aid Islands for children has met with a positive response in the Hessian municipalities. According to LKA information, there are now more than 2,800 of the aid islands – including shops, city administrations, libraries, restaurants and other facilities – in the state. Regional focal points are the catchment areas of the police headquarters in Southeast Hesse and South Hesse. The help islands are intended to offer children protection and support in small and large emergencies. There are similar campaigns with different names in other cities.

The project started at the beginning of the 2005/06 school year. So far, only a few cases are known in which children actually turned to the help islands, and there were even fewer where there was a risk that a child could actually become the victim of a crime, said an LKA spokeswoman in Wiesbaden . From the point of view of the police, this does not diminish the success of the project. Above all, this should strengthen the children's subjective sense of security on the way to school.
