Hesse: Muhammad Yunus awarded the Karl Kübel Prize

Bensheim (dpa/lhe) - Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was honored on Friday with the Karl Kübel Prize, which is endowed with 25,000 euros. The Karl Kübel Foundation for Children and Families, based in Bensheim in southern Hesse, acknowledged the 82-year-old's extraordinary and diverse commitment to families.

The special jubilee prize of 15,000 euros for the 50th anniversary of the foundation went to Sara and Sali Nuru. The siblings support women's projects with their coffee label, which was founded in 2016.

The economist from Bangladesh received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his idea of granting unsecured microloans primarily to women, so that they can break out of poverty. To this end, he founded the Grameen Bank.

The foundation, named after its founder, the entrepreneur Karl Kübel (1909-2006), currently supports around 80 social projects worldwide. Previous winners include the singer Peter Maffay, the SAP co-founder Dietmar Hopp and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
