Hesse: Nature Conservation Union calls for the traditional bird count

Wetzlar (dpa / lhe) - nature conservationists in Hesse have again called for the traditional hands-on campaign "Hour of the Winter Birds". From January 6th to 8th, the birds should be counted for an hour at the bird feeder, in the garden or in the park and the result reported, said the Hesse Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) in Wetzlar on Wednesday about the nationwide campaign.

"We are curious to see whether the current mild winter phase, as in previous years, will lead to less air traffic at the bird feeder. Without frost and snow, many bird species find their food more easily in nature - so we will probably count fewer visitors and species at the bird feeders. We have seen this before in mild winters," said deputy state chairman Bernd Petri, according to the announcement.

In the bird census in January 2022, the house sparrow was seen most frequently, followed by the great tit and the blue tit. More than 13,000 people took part in Hesse at the time. "The data collected is extremely valuable for bird protection because it provides information about the state of the native bird life in our settlements," says Petri. The bird count is held for the 13th time.
