Hesse: New season at the English Theater: Uncertainty about the lease

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - In the third attempt, the new season at the English Theater in Frankfurt is to be opened with "Secret Life of Humans". The author David Byrne will take over the direction himself and stage the play from scratch, said artistic director Daniel Nicolai on Thursday. "Secret Life of Humans," which premieres September 16, is about nothing less than human history and is inspired by best-selling author Yuval Noah Harari ("A Brief History of Humankind"). The piece was supposed to be shown twice, but had to be canceled again and again due to the corona virus.

Meanwhile, there are still uncertainties about the theater's lease, which expires at the end of the year. "It would be a disaster for the city and country and far beyond if we had to leave our location here," said Nicolai. A fire letter was written to speak to everyone involved. He is optimistic that a solution will be found. The theater has been using the Commerzbank premises in the Gallileo high-rise rent-free for many years. Now the bank is moving out of the tower.

In the coming season, the English Theater will also be showing the musical "Sister Act", the comedy "Now and Then" and the play "Malala. A Girl with a Book" about the young human rights activist and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

The theater with its 300 seats is in the immediate vicinity of the opera and theater. As a rule, actors and the creative team are selected in London and also spend the first rehearsal time there. The actors only move to Frankfurt shortly before the premiere. Corona had also shaped the season that is now coming to an end: "The bottom line is that we are satisfied, both with the capacity utilization and with the productions," said Nicolai.
