Hesse: No school portal email addresses planned for students

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - In the future, no e-mail addresses for schoolchildren should be provided via the state's Hesse-wide school portal. The Ministry of Culture in Wiesbaden explains this in an answer to a parliamentary question from the SPD parliamentary group, among other things, with data protection reasons. The ministry also referred to the possibility for chats and forums in the virtual learning rooms of the school portal. There is also a messenger function.

"Pupils do not usually communicate via e-mail, but via message functions such as "messenger" or "chats", explained the ministry. The topic of e-mail addresses has so far played a subordinate role in the feedback and suggestions from users of the school portal. There are alternative ways for students and teachers to exchange digital information with each other.

The SPD member of parliament Nina Heidt-Sommer criticized that the school portal does not meet the needs in practice. Secondary and vocational schools, for example, complained about the lack of a school e-mail address. Pupils could use this address for contacts, for example when looking for an internship.
