Hesse: Pet register: Hundreds of dogs escaped on New Year's Eve

Sulzbach (dpa/lhe) - The pet register Tasso registered over 660 escaped dogs on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Especially in the period between midnight and 1 a.m., many pet owners reported their dog missing, said the animal protection association in Sulzbach, Hesse, on Wednesday. Some of the dogs are still wanted.

"For animals, the New Year's firecrackers simply mean enormous stress. Anyone who has ever accompanied a pet through New Year's Eve knows exactly that the animals are afraid of death - which of course also applies to wild animals," said Heike Weber, head of animal welfare at Tasso.

At the turn of the year, 454 dogs across Germany had been reported to the organization as having escaped - at that time there was a ban on the sale of fireworks due to the corona.

On average, 88 dogs were reported missing at Tasso every day in 2022. According to its own statements, it is Europe's largest free pet register and advocates a ban on private fireworks to protect animals.
