Hesse: prison sentence for hatchet attack on wife is final

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - After an attack on his wife with a kitchen cleaver, a 50-year-old man has to go to prison for nine and a half years. The Frankfurt district court announced on Friday that the judgment issued in mid-December for attempted manslaughter had become final after the defense had waived an appeal.

In January last year, the accused ambushed the 36-year-old woman after the separation in front of a restaurant in downtown Frankfurt and attacked her with an axe. At the last second, the victim managed to entrench himself in the bar. The woman survived the attack unharmed, only her companion suffered minor injuries. In court, the accused admitted the course of events, but denied the intention to kill. Although the defense had asked for an acquittal, the circuit court convicted him after he had made death threats before the crime.
