Hesse: Prisoners often responsible for fires in prisons

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - There have been 17 fires in the Hessian prisons in the past three years. The main risk factor for fires in the prisons are fires that are deliberately caused by prisoners in their cell, said Justice Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) in response to a parliamentary question from the FDP parliamentary group in Wiesbaden.

In order to reduce the risk of these fires, the cells in the Hessian prisons were equipped with smoke detectors in 2020 and 2021. Since 2018, only mattresses for which the technical feature “flame-retardant” applies have been procured for the cells in the prisons, the minister explained.

According to the Ministry of Justice, there were ten fires in Hessian prisons in 2020 and three in the year. Four fires were counted by the end of June this year.
